Dutch language and culture for adults

LanguageOne offers three new 10-week programmes at beginners level for adults, in small groups or private sessions. You will learn the basics in Dutch enabling you to communicate using short sentences. The Dutch language will be practiced in an interactive manner throughout the courses, provided by native-speaking Dutch teachers.

For whom
The courses are for beginners who have not studied Dutch before. We invite adults with Dutch/Belgian roots, people with a family connection to the Netherlands or Belgium and anyone interested in Dutch language and culture.
We will focus on the basics of the Dutch language, leading to having simple conversations, reading short texts, and becoming familiar with common Dutch expressions. You will also learn about Dutch and Flemish culture.

The courses are based on the can-do statements of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR). The CEFR has provided a set of six reference levels: A1 and A2, B1 and B2, C1 and C2.

In Dutch for beginners-grade 1 we will focus on oral communication skills
In Dutch for beginners-grade 2 we will emphasize reading and writing
In Dutch for beginners-grade 3 we will integrate all the skills and together we will develop them further into more complex writing, reading more advanced texts and having more fluent conversations.

You must have completed grade 1 before starting grade 2. After you have completed both grades at LanguageOne you will have accomplished level A1 (beginners): Breakthrough – a basic command of the language, familiar with everyday expressions and able to make very simple sentences. In grade 2 you will start working towards level A2, with a focus on vocabulary.

At the end of 10-week programmes you will be able to

  • start a conversation with a Dutch native speaker about basic concepts and very familiar topics
  • ask strangers for help in areas of immediate need
  • recognize familiar words and very basic phrases about yourself, immediate family and concrete surroundings
  • write a simple postcard or fill in forms with name and address data

Upon 90% attendance you will receive a certification of participation. A minimum of 5 participants is required to start the programme.
